RELIGIOUS RIGHT HOMOPHOBE PAUL CAMERON SAYS HE WAS VICTIM OF MALE RAPE The following is a transcripted segment of the NewsTalk Television talk show of July 7, 1995 on the subject of government AIDS funding with host Ernie Anastos. Guest Paul Cameron, one of the religious right's most widely cited "experts" on the subject of homosexuality, admits to the audience that he was once raped by another man when he was a child. He claims the experience had no effect on the objectivity of his views toward homosexuals. ANASTOS [speaking to Cameron]: I think our audience wants to know this. . . . This gentlemen says he . . . he's talking about you [Cameron]. . . . "He's so homophobic [he] must have had a bad homosexual experience." Do you want to talk about that? CAMERON: Well, do you want me to tell you? Well, as a child . . . as . . . as . . . as a child I was raped by a homosexual, that's true. [Audience hoots, yells] ANASTOS: Wait, OK hold on. Wait a second, wait . . . wait. I really. . . . It's very important that we keep our discussion at . . . at I level that I think we can all feel, you know, good about. Let's . . . let's just talk about the issue. . . . I know it gets very emotional here. I was not aware, Dr. Cameron, I did not ask that question because I had some previous knowledge of your experience. CAMERON: Oh, OK. ANASTOS: So really . . . and I . . . I'm glad that you're responding to it. Do you want to, do you want to. . . . Do we have time? Can we talk about this? CAMERON: Let . . . let me, allright. For instance, now, actually as near as I can tell, outside of being an event in my life, it had no particular influence on me. However, as I grew older and I was pro-, remember I was a pro-homosexual, I was sort of quasi-gay rights when I was getting my degree at the University of Colorado. . . . It's only been experience dealing with homosexuals, experience dealing with the problems of homosexuality that I finally abandoned my liberal views and realized that I was wrong to be liberal on sexual issues. Now actually, God has said this is an abominable activity. . . . I never as a graduate student nor as a Ph.D. knew what homosexuals do. But I guarantee you this: If people know what homosexuals do and understand the dangerousness of what they do, then they'll understand why any encouragement, any toleration of homosexuality is foolish. ____________________________________ Submitted by Mark E.
